About Matt

Matt has served in full-time ministry since 1992.  In 2014, he joined the staff of Peoples Church in Fresno, California where he serves as Worship Arts Pastor.

A few months after the move, Matt’s wife, Marybeth was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.  Following several months of intensive treatment, Marybeth passed away in July of 2015.  In November of 2015, Kari and her five boys lost Eddie suddenly to a heart attack after he finished preaching on a Sunday morning at their church (Northpointe Church – Fresno, CA).  Eddie served as the children’s pastor at Northpointe for nearly 15 years.  This was the most tragic year for both the Perkins and Crain families.

Matt and Kari met the following year over a cup of coffee and found that they had an unbelievably similar journey. In fact, up until 2016, Matt and Kari’s world’s couldn’t have been farther apart, yet run so parallel. Both married at 19 years of age and serving in ministry throughout their married life, they found that they had much in common; and they also found love in relating to their healing.

“We are in awe of the story God has given us; He has shown that He is good at restoration, that it’s okay to love twice and again, and that we’re never finished being made into God’s best version of us.”

God continues to write their story…On August 18, 2017, Matt and Kari were married with their combined 7 children (five boys and two girls) at their side.  “God can take your broken pieces and create something new.  Yes, bad things happen…but that doesn’t change the fact that God is good and he can bring beauty from the ashes.”

The Family Blend

Prior to joining Peoples Church, Matt served at Faith Assembly in Orlando, Florida for seven years and has been in full-time ministry since 1992. He has also served in churches in Wisconsin, Colorado, and Illinois. He is passionate about worship and has been a contributing writer and podcast host for leading worship blogs and has spoken and sang extensively for conferences and retreats throughout America.

Matt currently serves on the board of directors for The Art of Life Cancer Foundation which exists to inspire people impacted by cancer to connect and heal through creative expression.  To benefit the foundation, he is working on a CD to bring hope and inspiration to those going through a cancer journey. This project features a stellar line up of producers and recording artists contributing to the project.

As a major coffee enthusiast, you will probably find him roasting and enjoying some handcrafted coffee in his spare time.
